He said Mahaffey became a person of interest and later a suspect. “We have a piece of stolen mail and included in the mail was a check,” he said, adding that the check was deposited in Mahaffey’s account. “She made it out to herself,” Esson said. LA MIRADA – A local PTA president was behind bars Friday, accused of stealing mail and a check worth more than $4,000 from a neighbor. Kelly Coleen Mahaffey, 43, who is the PTA president at La Pluma Elementary School in the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, was arrested Thursday night on suspicion of mail theft, forgery and possession of a controlled substance, authorities said. The La Mirada resident was being held Friday in the sheriff’s Norwalk Station jail in lieu of $20,000 bail. Deputies served a search warrant at her home Thursday and seized checks, a computer, a substance suspected to be a drug and other items. Mahaffey was arrested at Behringer Athletic Facility at Alicante Road and Hillsborough Drive. Mahaffey’s term as school PTA president ends in June.
