Four die, thousands affected in severe floods in Bekasi: BPBD

first_imgAt least four people have died and thousands of others have been affected by severe floods that inundated 24 districts in Bekasi on Tuesday, the West Java Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has confirmed. The victims have been identified as Faisal Amri, 25, and M. Airil Amhrir, 15, both of whom were residents of Harapan Baru housing complex in West Bekasi, and Faizin, 51, and Muhamada Jamil, 9, who were from Kayuringin Jaya subdistrict in South Bekasi.  At least 14 districts in Karawang regency were also inundated by floods due to overflowing water from the Cidawolong River, affecting 10,529 houses. “We have recorded 9,514 people displaced [by the flood] and zero casualties in the area [Karawang regency],” Budi said, adding that the flood in Subang inundated 3,435 houses across six districts. The floods led state-owned electricity firm PT PLN to cut the power supply to 1,245 electric relay stations in Bekasi, Cikarang, Karawang and Purwakarta. As of Wednesday afternoon, PLN had only restored power to 1,002 stations in the flood-affected areas, West Java PLN senior manager of general affairs Andhoko Soeyono said.Andhoko said his office had deployed 451 people to the flood-affected areas in West Java to inspect, clean up and dry out the electric relay stations that had previously been submerged by floodwaters.PLN restored the power supply after ensuring safety and conducting a security check of the residents’ houses alongside neighborhood unit chiefs and other residents. West Java Social Agency head Dodo Suhendar said the office would continue to provide aid for residents affected by the floods, including by providing baby food, fast food, emergency kitchen supplies, tents, blankets, mattresses and hygiene kits. “[Officers] will coordinate with the local BPBD to list the needed logistic supplies.
